Abstract

We start in this chapter our study of the dimension theory of dynamical systems and its relation with the thermodynamic formalism (see Section 2.3). We first consider geometric constructions modeled by the full shift in which case we can avoid the thermodynamic formalism without too much pain. On the other hand, this should make the reader appreciate the simplification and unification that are allowed by the thermodynamic formalism in the following chapters.
