Abstract

This article describes Stueckelberg’s original road to a causal and renormal-ized S-matrix, from his taking up Heisenberg’s idea of the S-matrix in 1944 to the final version of his formalism in 1950. For clarity’s sake, the account does not strictly follow Stueckelberg’s arguments in all points. This is corrected in an Appendix where three examples of his original work are presented and anlalyzed in detail.
