Abstract
The story of how I met met Israel Gohberg and began to work with him is related earlier in the “Gohberg Micellanea” which were written for Israel’s 60th birthday celebration and are reproduced in Part 3 of this book. To amplify just a little: In those days our department was concentrated in one wing of the Ziskind building with ten offices, five on each side of the corridor. The occupants of eight of them kept their doors closed. The departmental secretary (who had no choice in the matter) and Israel (who had a choice in the matter) kept their doors open.
