Zusammenfassung
Die Schlafkrankheit und die Chagas-Krankheit werden beide von Vertretern der Trypanosomen verursacht. Die Schlafkrankheit wird auch als afrikanische Trypanosomiasis bezeichnet, und ihre Erreger sind Trypanosoma brucei gambiense (Westafrikanische Schlafkrankheit) sowie Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (Ostafrikanische Schlafkrankheit). Die Chagas-Krankheit tritt in Amerika auf und wird auch südamerikanische Trypanosomiasis genannt und durch Trypanosoma cruzi hervorgerufen. Auch wenn in beiden Fällen Trypanosomen die Verursacher sind, so bestehen doch etliche Unterschiede sowohl zwischen den Erregern als auch den Erkrankungen, so dass beide Krankheiten in gesonderten Kapiteln abgehandelt werden.
