Zusammenfassung
Der Verursacher der Schistosomiasis, auch Bilharziose genannt, plagt die Menschheit schon seit langem. Bereits in Papyrusrollen aus dem alten Ägypten wird die Krankheit eindeutig beschrieben (3. Jahrtausend vor Christus) und auch ihre zum Teil abenteuerlichen Behandlungsmöglichkeiten sind überliefert. Die Ursache der Krankheit erkannte man damals jedoch noch nicht. Auch Avicenna (980–1037), der „Vater“ der arabischen Medizin, beschreibt sehr eindrücklich den Blutharn (Hämaturie), eines der Symptome der Schistosomiasis. Als unter Napoleon französische Soldaten in Ägypten reihenweise an der Hämaturie erkrankten, glaubte man, dass lange Märsche bei großer Hitze die Ursache seien. Erste Hinweise auf die tatsächliche Ursache fand der französische Arzt M. A. Ruffer (1859–1917) aus Lyon, der das Bakteriologie-Institut in Kairo leitete und 1909 in den Nieren von 2000 Jahre alten Mumien verkalkte Eier jener Saugwürmer fand, die die Schistosomiasis bereits im alten Ägypten ausgelöst hatten. 1851 kam der deutsche Arzt Th. Bilharz mit einer Expedition des Herzogs von Coburg nach Ägypten und wurde Professor an der Medizinschule Kasr-el-Ain. Er untersuchte Leichen von Soldaten, die an Hämaturie gelitten hatten, und stellte fest, dass ein Saugwurm für die dramatischen Veränderungen im Urogenitalsystem verantwortlich war. Bilharz zu Ehren wurde der Parasit Bilharzia haematobium genannt.
