«S’agit-il de construire une ville? La première chose á faire est de choisir un endroit sain. Il doit être élevé, á l’abri des brouillards et du givre, situé sous la douce température d’un ciel pur, sans avoir á souffrir ni d’une trop grande chaleur ni d’un trop grand froid. […]» (1) Dans son célèbre traité De architectura, Vitruve pose une des premières pierres de la tradition de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme. Il s’inspire pour ce faire de ce qu’ont laissé les Grecs dans ces domaines. Il explique en détail l’influence du soleil sur les différentes fonctions urbaines. Les Grecs et les Romains connaissaient en effet depuis longtemps l’importance d’une bonne orientation pour l’utilisation d’un bâtiment.
