Zusammenfassung
Die Aufforderung, daß sich die Erforschung der Virusarten auf Beobachtung und Experiment beschränken und alle Versuche einer Einordnung der hier erwachsenden Probleme in das biologische und weltanschauliche Denken — weil vorläufig aussichtslos — beiseite schieben möge (H. Zinsser, N. W. Pirie u. a.), hatte einen in solchem Ausmaß seltenen Mißerfolg zu verzeichnen. Dies war mit Sicherheit vorauszusehen. Ursprung und Wesen des Lebens zu ergründen, war und bleibt letztes und höchstes Ziel der Wissenschaft, und die Eigenschaften der virusartigen Infektionsstoffe, vor allem die minimalen und im Minimalen doch auch wieder begrenzten Dimensionen ihrer Einheiten berechtigten zu der Erwartung, diesem Ziele näherzukommen. Nur so ist es verständlich, daß die vom Spezialisten erzielten Ergebnisse so rasch das Interesse weitester Kreise zu erwecken vermochten, und daß sich nicht nur Biologen der verschiedensten Richtung, sondern auch Chemiker und Physiker mit der „wahren Natur der Virus -arten“ zu beschäftigen begannen.
