Abstract

Particularly in the English-speaking world, the work of Karl Leonhard early met with the fate of the classics: his writings are often quoted but little read and even fewer attempts have been made to apply his nosological system in research and everyday practice. Although Leonhard’S classification of endogenous psychoses has been available for 25 years (Leonhard 1957), there has not yet been any methodologically consistent, clinical follow-up of his system or any attempt to expand it from a psychological, biological or epidemiological viewpoint, with the exception of a few attempts that have brought encouraging results (1; 2; 13; 14).
