Comparison between Three-Body and Many-Body Descriptions of 11Li

Abstract

Most of the theoretical work on the halo nucleus 11Li has used three-body models based on the 9Li + n + n configuration. We show that a self-consistent mean-field description of the neutron halo of 11Li in fair agreement with the experimental mass density is possible using density-dependent interactions with a symmetry energy a sym ~ 26 MeV at saturation density. A substantial improvement is also obtained for the binding energy of asymmetric nuclei through the nuclear chart. The three-body and the many-body approaches to 11Li are complementary.
