Zusammenfassung
Theorien über Mechanismen des Gasaustausches, die eine zufriedenstellende Erklärung für die Funktionsweise der konventionellen Beatmung bieten, können nicht auf die Hochfrequenzbeatmung übertragen werden. So läßt sich etwa die Annahme, daß der Gasaustausch per Diffusion in der Lunge proportional dem Zugvolumen minus dem Totraumvolumen ist, nicht für die Hochfrequenzbeatmung anwenden, da hier die Tidalvolumina nur minimal größer oder sogar kleiner als der Totraum sind.
