Low-cost CAD/CAM-coupling Applications of Artificial Intelligence to Robotic Assembly

Abstract

This paper deals with the problem of low-cost design-to-production integration. Due to the fact that there are now over 1/2-million AutoCAD users, including most of small companies, a new approach to CAD/CAM-coupling is proposed to connect an AutoCAD assembly drawing file as input with CNC production machines and assembly robots as output within one automated informational flow. Since interpretation of any real assembly drawing is strongly creative engineering task which until now has no satisfactory software solution, an Artificial Intelligence application in Prolog is involved. Case study illustrates automatic understanding of assembly drawings. Suggestions are made about fields for further applications, namely automatic determination of product’s kinematics and robotic assembly sequences, generation of product’s subassemblies and parts drawings, designer assembly production knowledge support.
