Zusammenfassung
Unter den vielen aus Plasma und Geweben stammenden Sepsis-Mediatoren wird seit einigen Jahren den sogenannten Cytokinen erhöhte Bedeutung beigemessen. Unter dem Namen Cytokine wird eine Gruppe von hormonartig wirkenden Proteinen subsummiert, von denen früher einige unter den individuellen Namen wie Interferon, Lymphokine, Interleukin, Lymphotoxin usw. bekannt waren. Während Hormone generell von spezialisierten Organen, den endokrinen Drüsen, produziert werden und über den Blutweg zu den jeweiligen Zielorganen gelangen, werden Cytokine in allen Organen des Körper produziert. Sie fungieren als „Botenstoffe“ zwischen verschiedenen immunkompetenten und inflammatorisch relevanten Zellen und koordinieren die Immunantwort des Körpers.
