Dynamics of flow instabilities in thermal and hydrodynamic systems

The stability behaviour and time-dependence of vortex patterns in different physical systems are considered. The classical stability problems of heat transfer in horizontal fluid layers and momentum transfer between rotating cylinders are generalized by the extension from closed flow systems to open flow systems and variations of the geometry. For both cases, for convective and centrifugal instabilities, the superimposed throughflow effects phenomena with respect to the onset of time-dependent motions. The special time-behaviour of the different physical systems is described as well as their similarities and differences.
