Abstract
One way to get acquainted with the multigrid idea is to analyze standard problems, “model problems” from the multigrid point of terminology, and to solve them by simple singlegrid and multigrid algorithms. It is natural to restrict the first analysis to such problems where a deep theoretical insight and the knowledge about the structure of the solution is available. This chapter will—as a first goal—help to reduce the time which has to be invested for such an analysis. Starting from well-known examples a basic introduction to multigrid is given and some theory is presented with the aim to explain why and how multigrid works—the main purpose of this chapter.
