Summary
The author discusses the interests of the mentally ill, of their relatives and of professionals in psychiatry from the point of view that these interests are for the most part identical. For the „Angehörigenvereinigung“ (Relatives’ Association), lobbying or public relations are not activities undertaken for their own sake but are essential for advancing the psychiatry reform. A vital prerequisite for efficient work is that the independent role of the relatives and their associations is recognised on all levels of psychiatric care, especially in view of the fact that Austria, unlike several other countries, has as yet no independent organisation of mentally ill persons. Although recognition of the Relatives’ Association is growing in Austria, its practical work occasionally arouses resistance based on monopolistic thinking. In addition, attempts to exclude those concerned from participation and co-determination in psychiatric care are questionable from a democratic viewpoint, an aspect of particular importance in psychiatry.
