Three Dimensional Computed Tomography of the Craniocervical Junction

Abstract

The radiographic evaluation of the bony anatomy of the upper cervical spine and foramen magnum region is relatively difficult. The complex bony geometry of this region makes no two-dimensional imaging technique entirely satisfactory. Multiplanar CT reconstruction (MPR) images are commonly used to aide in the interpretation of axial CT studies. The recent development of three-dimensional computer graphics images derived from routine axial CT images (3D-CT) provides a powerful new method for displaying these bony anatomic relationships. This report briefly explains the 3D-CT technique and discusses its advantages in the craniocervical junction region.
