Abstract

Since its introduction as a therapeutic procedure for herniated discs, chymopapain chemonucleolysis has been limited to the lumbar spine. Chymopapain chemonucleolysis at the cervical level has been considered a potentially harmful technique. In response to this contraindication, some authors performed intradiscal injection of aprotinin in the treatment of cervical herniated discs [3]. However the effectiveness of this enzyme in the treatment of lumbar herniated discs appears to be doubtful and its use at the cervical level cannot be recommended.
