Anesthesia and complications in chymopapain chemonucleolysis

  • Chapter
Book cover Interventional Radiology in Bone and Joint

Abstract

Chemonucleolysis is a painful procedure which requires anesthesia. In addition, chymopapain, an enzymatic substance extracted from the latex of the unripe papaya, is antigenic. In approximately 0.5% of cases, chymopapain chemonucleolysis (CN) produces anaphylactic shock. For these reasons, CN requires the presence of an anesthesiologist experienced in radiologic procedures and capable of intervening in case of anaphylactic shock [1, 4, 12].
