Abstract

Maternal diabetes compromises the fetal development and behaviour. Congenital malformations, unexpected intrauterine death, macrosomia and sometimes intrauterine growth retardation are known features. Functional and morphologic changes are present at both cellular and tissue levels. Although lethal consequences still occur, fetal and neonatal outcome have dramatically improved since tight diabetic control has been instituted before and during pregnancy.
