Abstract
From May 4th 1855 when the first fistula hospital in the world began in New York until the opening of the second fistula hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the 24th May 1975, there has been an overwhelming number of publications dealing with the problem of genital fistula due to both obstetric and surgical causes. Many publications dealt with relatively small numbers of patients, but certain authors have had a vast experience and international recognition for their expertise with the problem, beginning with Naguib Mahfouz of Cairo, Chassar Moir of Oxford, a group of surgeons in West Africa headed by John Lawson, surgeons in South Africa and India, and the Hamlins of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
