Abstract
According to figures published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 198330, diseases of the circulatory system were responsible for some 23% of deaths throughout the world, including both developing and developed nations. In the developed nations alone, however, such diseases accounted for nearly half (48%) of all deaths, among which 21% were due to ischemic heart disease, 13% to cerebrovascular disorders and 14% to other vascular diseases. In other words, cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is second only to ischemic heart disease as a major health problem in the developed nations of the world (Fig. 7-1).
