Abstract

By law (Hälso- och Sjukvårdslagen 1983) all patients in Sweden are granted a good and equal care irrespective of where they live and what their financial status is. For specialized care like neurosurgery Sweden is divided into 6 regions with catchment populations varying from 0.9 to 1.8 million inhabitants. In our Uppsala-Örebro region (1.6 million inhabitants) 50% of the referring hospitals are situated at a distance between 200 and 390 km from the neurosurgical department in Uppsala. Nevertheless the neurosurgical unit in Uppsala has the responsiblity of organizing good and equal care all over the region for all the inhabitants.
