Anthospermum is the most widely distributed genus, occurring over most of Africa S of the Sahara with the exception of the W African and Zaire basin lowland rain forest region (Guineo-Congolian Region) and the adjacent N areas (“Guinea-Congolia/Sudania Regional Transition Zone” and Sudanian Region sensu White 1983 or Sudanian Domain of the Sudano-Zambezian Region sensu White 1965, 1971). The most widely distributed and essentially afromontane species, A. herbaceum, also extends across the Red Sea to the mountains of the Yemen Arab Republic and adjacent parts of Saudi Arabia. Several species occur in and are endemic to Madagascar (map, Fig. 1 a).
