Zusammenfassung
Dem Immunsystem kommt bei der Abwehr pathogener Keime, aber auch heterologer Proteine eine wesentliche Bedeutung zu. Es erleidet allerdings mit zunehmendem Alter eine Einbuße seiner Aktivität (Pahwa 1981, Weksler 1982, Erdman 1984), die sogar mit dem Altersvorgang ursächlich in Verbindung gebracht wird (Walford 1974). Tatsächlich wäre ein Rückgang der Lebenserwartung zwanglos mit einer Funktionseinbuße oder -störung des Immunsystems zu erklären, doch steht eine Bestätigung dieser Alternstheorie bis heute aus.
