Zusammenfassung

Die Zunahme der älteren Bevölkerung in den letzten Jahrzehnten und die Entwicklung immer neuer Arzneimittel haben dazu geführt, daß der Medikamentenverbrauch im höheren Lebensalter stark angestiegen ist. So wurde in Großbritannien gefunden, daß in der über 75jährigen Bevölkerung etwa dreimal soviele Medikamente verschrieben werden als in der übrigen Bevölkerung und daß die Frauen dieser Altersgruppe etwa doppelt soviele Medikamente einnehmen als die Männer (Law 1976, Hurwitz 1969a). Zu den am häufigsten eingenommenen Medikamenten gehören Entwässerungsmittel (Thiazide), Herzglykoside, Psychopharmaka, Antibiotika, Analgetika, Kortikosteroide und Antikoagulantien.
