Extracerebral Hematomas in Children

  • M. Choux
Part of the Advances in Neurotraumatology book series (NEUROTRAUMATOL., volume 1)

Post-traumatic extracerebral hematomas in children represent various types of hemorrhages with a different incidence and especially a different prognosis. Some, the extracranial ones, are frequent and without pathological consequences. Others, the extradural or subdural ones, are more rare but represent severe complications of head injuries. We will describe first the extracranial hematomas which are present in many head trauma in children. We will distinguish subcutaneous, subgaleal and subperiosteum hematomas. In a second part we will study the intra-cranial but extracerebral hematomas, in other words, those situated by the dura (extradural and subdural hematomas). We will emphasize, for each, the pediatric characteristics since the general aspects of these hematomas have been described in another chapter.
