Traumatic Extradural Hematomas

An extra-dural hematoma (EDH) is an epidural collection of blood situated between the dura and the bone. When it happens it is a neurotraumatological emergency but it is also the rarest complication of cranial traumas. The EDH is well known and has been described long ago (J. L. Petit 1750: Queloz170). It has led to several publications since the first typical clinical description of an EDH originating from the rupture of the middle meningeal artery was attributed to Jacobson (1885) by other authors (Gallagher55, McKissock133, Weaver215, Zuccarello229) xhese publications have been included in a review in 1974 by Zander and Campiche223 who underlined the frequency of atypical forms and the importance of an early diagnosis by angiography in order to operate as soon as possible, before an irreversible point, the EDH appearing to be an absolute operative indication.
