First, we will present those possibilities that bring the general surgeon face to face with an emergency situation. In such an emergency, he must decide whether he is ready and in a position to treat a patient with an acute vascular problem himself or whether he has sufficient time to transfer the patient to a specialized service. Aside from purely organizational and time factors, this decision depends upon his surgical abilities.
