Abstract

Confronted with a radical change in ability to communicate, whether this be insidious or sudden in onset, the victim will be required to have recourse to many adaptive measures in order to survive socially. The child who has to contend with a similar level of handicap as an integral part of his development also, in a different way has to come to terms with the fact that his life in many respects will be very different from that led by the vast majority of children.
