Zusammenfassung

Selten war in der Medizin die Aufklärung der Ätiopathogenese einer Erkrankung schlagartig auch schon mit der daraus abgeleiteten und in hohem Maße erfolgreichen Behandlung so eng verknüpft wie im Falle der Netzhautabhebung. Jules Gonins (1870–1935) revolutionäre Entdeckung, daß idiopathische Netzhautabhebungen stets mit Netzhautdefekten vergesellschaftet sind, und die geniale Schlußfolgerung daraus, durch Verschluß der Defekte die Netzhautabhebung heilen zu können, rechtfertigt eine Gliederung der „Geschichte der Netzhautabhebung“ in eine „Vor-Gonin-Ära“, eine „Gonin-Ära“ und eine „Nach-Gonin-Ära“.
