τo = (0,14 ± 0,06) MN/m2
-
1.
Der Wert ist mit der Kohäsion c = 0, 12 MN/m2 von Großproben aus geklüftetem Bunten Mergel vergleichbar;
-
2.
Summary
A Way of Calculating the Strength Properties of Jointed Clay Based on Field Observations. The study is based on the examination of 154 mountains, resp. mountain spurs in an area of 1700 km2 in a cuesta landscape (Fränkische Alb). The stratification is almost horizontal; a layer of clay (Opalinuston), 50–100 m thick, forms the base of the mountains, the overlying strata consist maiiüy of sandstones and limestones.
It should be noted that the height of the base (h) is nearly the same on opposite sides of a mountain, and that the value of h depends on the diameter D of the mountain (h = vertical distance between the upper surface of the clay layer and the bottom of the slope).
These observations are interpreted as follows: The shear stress at the bottom of the slope is the same in all the hills; its numerical value corresponds to that of the cohesion of jointed clay.
The shear stress at the bottom of the slope is calculated according to the formula
First of all, three statistical tests are made in order to show that the use of this formula in the statement t = const, is justified by the data of the field observations.
The application gives the value of the constant:
τo = (0.14 ±0.06) MN/m2
To is normally distributed, which is a subsequent confirmation of the statement t = const.
The statement, that the numerical value of τ 0 corresponds to that of the cohesion of jointed clay, is supported by the facts:
-
1.
The value is comparable to the value of cohesion c = 0.12 MN/m2 in large samples of jointed red marl.
-
2.
The natural form of a slope is quasi-stable if the shear stress at the bottom of the slope equals the cohesion.
