Summary
The general problem of the characterization of bioreactors is presented and it is recommended that for comparison purposes a “certificate of standards” should be created.
A detailed description of the significance of mixing behaviour as an important parameter for the characterization of bioreactors is given. A new method for the determination of mixing behaviour is also shown.
The coupHng of mixing behaviour with residence time distribution and the kinetics of biological processes is exemplified.
