Summary

The techniques of genetic engineering which have been developed within the last few years offer the possibility to construct organisms in the laboratory unknown to nature. For instance, the in vitro techniques which are briefly discussed here provide a great future for biotechnology.

On the one hand, these techniques open ways to obtain a variety of new products by means of biotechnological processes and on the other hand they provide promising prospects for breeding of highly productive industrial strains. An important problem in this connection is the application of these methods to industrially useful microorganisms.

As an example, the development of a possible system for in vitro genetic engineering with the “knallgas” bacteriumAlcaligenes eutrophus H16 is shown. This organism has not till now been genetically well examined.
