When — during the first days of this school — Professor Mitter asked me to summarize Schladming’s Winter school again, I accepted with great pleasure. It is indeed a challenge to try to put into perspective particle physics of our days for it is at the same time easy and difficult. It is easy and satisfying because of the tremendous steps forward we have taken during the last years; it is difficult and frustrating because we can easily overshoot our goal by taking for granted what is only a first hint. Thus there are two positions which I try to avoid: One is the euphoric position which claims that we have now solved all the problems and only small obstacles are in the way to a final “unified theory”or“world formula”. The other one is the ever-pessimistic position which keeps pointing out that we have achieved nothing because there are alternative explanations for everything.
