Abstract

The common view holds that class 1, endogenous, type-C RNA viruses are transmitted as virogenes, vertically through the germline and are thus eonfined to interbreeding members of a group of animals (usually a species), while class 2 viruses can be transmitted horizontally among animals. Until recently, it was thought that horizontal transmission was also eonfined to members of the same species. There is ample evidence to show that horizontal and vertical transmission of RNA tumor viruses oeeurs among members of a species, but new evidence suggests that interspecies horizontal transmission also occurs.
