Opinions differ as to how AVM should be treated 23, 52. Most neurosurgeons favour surgical treatment, although there is controversy concerning the criteria for selection of patients and surgical technique. Other neurosurgeons argue convincingly in favour of conservative treatment. It seems reasonable to advocate a treatment policy which allows selection of the most suitable therapy in each individual case. In most decision processes certain clinical variables are clearly more important than others. When evaluating a clinical decision it is therefore important to identify which clinical variables the decision is based on and to rank the variables in order of importance for the decision process.
