Zusammenfassung
Der von Paul Ehrlich geprägte Begriff „Chemotherapie“ kennzeichnet eine therapeutische Methode zur Elimination von Krankheitserregern aus dem menschlichen oder tierischen Organismus durch systemisch wirksame Arzneimittel. Bei den zu eliminierenden Krankheitserregern kann es sich um Parasiten, Bakterien, Pilze, Viren oder Tumorzellen handeln. Tumorzellen nehmen in diesem Zusammenhang eine besondere Stellung ein, da sie keine infizierenden, das heißt von außen in den Makroorganismus eindringenden Lebewesen sind. Auch sind sie keine selbständigen, nach der botanischen oder zoologischen Taxonomie klassifizierbaren Lebensformen. Man kann Tumorzellen viel eher als „zelluläre Revolutionäre“ bezeichnen, die sich den Regulationen und Restriktionen des Makroorganismus nicht mehr fügen und sich, einem Ausdruck Paul Ehrlichs folgend, wie „feindliche Brüder“ verhalten. Gemeinsam mit den eigentlichen Infektionserregern sind ihnen jedoch parasitäre Eigenschaften: Wie Infektionserreger leben auch Tumorzellen auf Kosten des Makroorganismus; wie diese oder mehr noch als die meisten Infektionserreger schädigen oder zerstören sie den Makroorganismus. Wegen dieser Parallelen vertrat schon Ehrlich die Auffassung, daß die Prinzipien der Chemotherapie auch auf die medikamentöse Behandlung bösartiger Neubildungen anwendbar sein müßten. Heute, siebzig Jahre nach den grundlegenden Arbeiten Paul Ehrlichs, können wir die Chemotherapie als eine therapeutische Disziplin der Medizin definieren, deren Aufgabe es ist, vermehrungsfähige und krankheitsverursachende Agentien durch chemische Eingriffe aus dem menschlichen oder tierischen Organismus zu entfernen.
