The FOBW technique can be applied to problems which are quite different in nature. In this chapter two applications will be discussed: detection of jet engine malfunctions which are manifest in the engine sounds, (Page 1967), and recognition of the ten spoken digits. In the first application, the signal to noise ratio is poor. The waveform records, however, are much more than “adequately long” in the sense of Section 3.1. In the second application the signal to noise ratio is good. The changing statistics of the speech signal do, however, present some problems which make this application most challenging.
