Jointing of Vitrified Clay Sewer Pipe
When the first sewer collection systems were installed, leak-proof sewer lines were not considered to be necessary. As a matter of fact, leaking lines were often considered to be desirable because in low areas leaking joints contributed to the lowering of the ground-water level. Little thought was given to the exfiltration of sewer waters into the ground, since pure-water systems were being installed in urban areas at about the same time as sewer systems.
