Both in size and morphology the viruses dealt with in the present report resemble the smallest RNA viruses, the picornaviruses. When reviewing the characteristics of the newly isolated agents, Mayor and Melnick (1966) therefore felt that this property and the DNA nature of the nucleic acid would justify their denotation as picodnaviruses in analogy to the term picorna (pico = very small, RNA).
