Lysosome Formation, Functioning and Fate

  • Eric Holtzman
Part of the Cell Biology Monographs book series (CELLBIOL, volume 3)

Our principal concerns in this chapter will be with general features of the mechanisms by which lysosomes participate in normal processes of intracellular digestion. We will consider the routes and mechanisms by which substrates and hydrolases are brought together and will also have occasion to take up some features of the lysosome surface, aspects of pH regulation within the organelles and the ways in which cells deal with digestive residues. Subsequent sections of the monograph will discuss extracellular events in which lysosomal hydrolases participate, and pathological processes.
