Abstract

Some of the manifold biological activities of endotoxins of gram-negative bacteria would be very interesting for therapeutic use in human patients. The following are the phenomena which have already been extensively studied in animal experiments:

  1. 1.

Considerable protection against severe and eventually lethal side-effects of radiotherapy or chemotherapeutic agents by the stimulation of granulopoiesis.

  2. 2.

The necrotizing effect of endotoxins on malignant tumors.

  3. 3.

    The pyrogenic effect of endotoxins.

  4. 4.

The development of tolerance during repeated treatment with endotoxins.
