The Pulmonary Response to Sepsis and Endotoxin: Clinical and Experimental Observations

  • G. H. A. ClowesJr.

In recent years, it has become apparent that the seriously infected patient is more than usually prone to pulmonary complications, which are all too often fatal. Burke et al. (11) recognized the importance of respiratory support in peritonitis to relieve excessive work of breathing and severe hypoxemia. Clowes et al. (13, 14) described a sequence of events in septic patients which is reproducible in laboratory animals rendered septic by the induction of peritonitis. An interstitial pneumonitis (Phase I) is succeeded, if unchecked, by bronchopneumonia (Phase II).
