Blood Coagulation Mechanism and Endotoxins: Hemostatic Defect in Septic Shock

  • Chapter
Gram-Negative Bacterial Infections and Mode of Endotoxin Actions

Abstract

The effect of endotoxins and bacterial toxins on the blood clotting system has been clearly demonstrated by means of the Sanarelli-Shwartzman phenomenon in the animal experiment (1, 2). The involvement of diffuse intravascular coagulation as the essential pathophysiological event is of decisive implication for the pathomorphological picture as well as for the course of the syndrome.
