Trigger Mechanism of Endotoxin-Induced Intravascular Coagulation

  • Chapter

Abstract

According to the classical theory of blood coagulation, the in vitro activation of coagulation in the intrinsic pathway starts with the activation of factor XII (Hageman factor) and in the extrinsic pathway with release of tissue thromboplastin. In both pathways, platelets with their surface and their constituents play an important role as accelerators of coagulation activation. In this short review, I would like to concentrate on the significance of Hageman factor activation (intrinsic pathway), of tissue thromboplastin from leukocytes and/or endothelial cells (extrinsic pathway) and of platelets (extrinsic and intrinsic systems).
