The Activation of Intravascular Coagulation by Endotoxin

Abstract

The intravascular activation of the blood clotting system is one among the many consequences of the presence of endotoxin in the blood stream. It is a very serious consequence indeed, since fibrin deposition in the microcirculation of vital organs is often responsible for the lethal outcome of endotoxin intoxication. This is most pronounced in the generalized Shwartzman reaction, a very complex phenomenon, which has recently been reviewed again by McKay (28).
