Abstract

An outsider like myself is not able to give any news to the specialists attending this meeting but only to present you with my impressions from studying the literature. However, according to the conception of Dr. Urbaschek, representatives of pharmacology and pathology are to be involved in the discussion on endotoxemia and on pathophysiology of gram-negative infections. As a pharmacologist I am interested especially in the pharmacology of the mediators of endotoxin shock. There is no doubt that in shock some highly effective substances, for instance histamine, bradykinin or catecholamines, are released from stores or freshly produced from precursors as in the case of anaphylactic shock. Furthermore, certain chain reactions are activated of which only the complement activation should be considered.
