Abstract

The value of surgical cordotomy for the relief of intractable pain was recognized by Spiller and Martin2 in 1912, and by Foerster1 1913. The percutaneous electrical cordotomy was introduced by Mullan 3, 4 (1963, 1965) and modified by Rosomoff5 (1965). This method, which uses a lateral approach between C 1 and C 2, has the advantages of avoiding major surgery and reducing mortality and morbidity.
