It is an honour and a pleasure for me to address this audience to celebrate the loth anniversary of the Winter School in Schladming. Let me begin by thanking everybody who has helped to make this Winter School such a successful enterprise, in particular the Austrian Authorities for having carried the financial burden and Professor Urban and his collaborators for their enthusiasm and devotion which have contributed so much to the development of high energy physics in Austria and in Europe. Since the main theme of the School has always been elementary particle physics, I will speak about its relation to science as a whole. In order to do so, let me go back to the beginning of my scientific association with my friend and teacher, Professor Urban, which is more than a quarter of a century old. It was just after the war when he introduced me to meson theory and in fact at that time the science of elementary particle physics was just beginning. I still remember that after having calculated for a year or so various cross sections by perturbation theory, which was fashionable at that time, I asked him about the status of our experimental knowledge concerning these cross sections.
