Die Bildung von Ionen kann nicht nur durch EPD-EPA-Wechselwirkung, sondern auch durch ED-EA-Wechselwirkung eingeleitet werden, z. B. bei der Reaktion:
Das entstehende Na+ fungiert als EPA und das entstehende Cl−-Ion als EPD. Die Wechselwirkung zwischen diesen ist in der Gasphase für die Assoziation der Ionen maßgeblich.
